Early this morning, regular tram service began on the double-track overpass near Truda Square on the left bank of the Ob River in Novosibirsk. Russia's largest tram overpass, 632 meters long, was erected by VIS Group as part of a concession to build a bridge across the Ob River. It is a key element of the left-bank interchange, which for the first time ever allows tram service over a large section of Novosibirsk to be organized on an overpass over automobile traffic.
“This is an example of how public-private partnerships are creating not only infrastructure that will be operated on a paid basis, but also essential facilities that will be free to use, while playing a significant role in the city's development,” VIS Group CEO Sergey Yudin told journalists present at the tram launch.
The first trams appeared on the overpass around 6:00 am, and their passengers received prepaid Troika cards from VIS Group featuring an image of the cable-stayed section of the fourth bridge. The entire open section spans approximately 1.5 kilometers, which is comparable to the distance between two Novosibirsk metro stations. The overpass consists of 14 metal spans sustained by 15 supports. At its highest point, it rises 12 meters above ground; its width is 15 meters, 8 meters of which is roadway. A unique feature, used in Novosibirsk for the first time, was the utilization of vibration-insulated track bedplates. The rubberized track base reduces noise and vibration during tram travel. Welded rail joints also ensure a low-speed ride.
“The concession is not merely a toll section of the bridge crossing. The project has enabled a large-scale upgrade of utility networks in the bridge construction area and the creation of new interchanges.” Since 2022, the Zyryanovsky overpass has also been operating with a double-track tram line. It has essentially been entirely rebuilt. This year, we will complete and open another ramp at the left-bank interchange, which runs parallel to the overpass. Only the part of the ramps adjacent to the tunnel in line with Stanislavsky Street will remain. The overpass opened today will radically change the situation at one of Novosibirsk's busiest transport hubs,” noted Sergei Yudin.
By the end of the week, the old tracks at Truda Square will be dismantled; this work began today. Once the asphalt pavement is laid, drivers will no longer need to slow down when passing this section, which should significantly reduce congestion during peak hours. In the second half of 2026, one-way bus traffic will also open on the tram overpass.
The main bridge crossing is a new 5.1-kilometer-long road, 1.5 kilometers of which is the bridge itself, with a 380-meter cable-stayed section. The bridge opened to traffic in December 2025. According to the Moscow Traffic Management Center, over 2 million motorists have used the new transport artery since the beginning of 2026. The project is being implemented by VIS Group under a concession agreement with the Novosibirsk Region Government, with co-financing from the federal budget.
